Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Buffalo Creation Story - Legendary Collection

Buffalo Creation Story - Legendary Collection
Category: Blankets/Robes/Throws

For a century, Pendleton Woolen Mills has woven the legends and symbols of Native American tribes into beautiful blankets. Native Americans were our first and remain our most loyal customers. In the early 20th century, Pendleton was among the few American mills making blankets specifically for the Indian trade. A Pendleton blanket continues to signify honor and respect. For a hundred years, Native Americans have acknowledged births, deaths and major milestones and accomplishments with the gift of a Pendleton blanket.

Buffalos are not typically associated with Navajo culture. So when contemporary Navajo artist Andrew Hobson discovered a story of how the buffalo evolved in Navajo creation stories, he was fascinated. Hobson's original painting of the Buffalo-Who-Never-Dies of the White Buffalo Tribe inspired this Pendleton blanket. In the tale, Buffalo became angry with Holy Man for having two buffalo women as his wives. Holy Man killed the angry buffalo with magic arrows and wands. But to his dismay, all the buffalos began to die. Then sad, Holy Man brought the buffalo back to life and showed him how to revive all the other buffalo. The central figure shows the angry buffalo fractured in pieces to symbolize his death and journey back to life. Four buffalo tribes are shown inside protective medicine hoops, and the four sacred mountain ranges of the Navajo surround the central buffalo. The artist frames the work in the abstract rainbow symbolizing his personal Yeii, or protective deity. Napped. Felt bound. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Through the ages, a bright star in the Little Dipper has been a constant source of navigation for the peoples of Earth. The North Star appears stationary, and the Inuit call it Nuuttuittuq, the star that never moves. Paiute legend relates how a brave son named Na-Gah became the star that does not travel and the guiding light for all living creatures. Na-Gah climbed to the top of a high mountain to win his father's respect. The peak was so tall that he found himself high above all the other mountains. When his father came looking for him, he found Na-Gah stuck high on the mountain peak. Not wanting his son to die, his father turned Na-Gah into a star that shines brightly and guides all who can see him. Big Dipper
Category: Kids

The Big Dipper is also known as the Big Bear. Many Native American cultures saw the Big Dipper stars as a bear. A Kiowa legend tells of seven sisters and a brother who lived where there were many bears. One day, the sisters were playing with their brother who pretended to be a bear. Then magically, he turned into a bear and began to chase the girls. They jumped on a big rock shouting, "save us!" The rock heard them and grew higher and higher, keeping them out of the bear's reach. Soon they touched the sky and became seven stars in a group shaped like a bear - The Big Dipper. In winter the seven stars are just above the very high rock called Tso-aa, also known as Devils Tower. It marks the spot where the Kiowa began their southern migration. On the sides of the rock the claw marks made by the bear can still be seen. Woven in our American mills. Felt bound. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA. Napped.

When countless forests were green and the trees grew tall. When deer grazed by mighty rivers. Today you can see wild buffalo only in our National Parks, where they are protected. This archival design is a fusion (sampler) of Native American-inspired symbols and colors. The historic pattern has its origins in a rare illustration that accompanied a line of Pendleton blankets made in 1924 (see our Where the Wool Grows Blanket #72316). In the black-and-white drawing, a Native American chief is wearing a robe that inspired our re-creation. The original design was created to appeal to Pendleton's first blanket customers, the Native American peoples of the West. The unique colors and intricately woven patterns were hallmarks of early Pendleton Trade Blankets. The stripe is woven of bands in varying widths, color combinations and traditional geometric shapes—triangles, diamonds, zigzags and more. The pattern underlines how use of color and design established Pendleton as the favorite trade blanket of the era.

Aloha to Lahaina, on the island of Maui, once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The Lahaina Wave blanket salutes the islands and surfers, then and now. In 1779, the log of Captain Cook’s expedition ship HMS Discovery recorded the first European written description of Hawaiian surfing. By then, surfing was an art and popular sport among native Hawaiians. Chiefs or kings were proud to show their mastery of the waves, and surfing was known as the “Sport of Kings.” The design of this blanket combines traditional tribal inspired designs from the mainland with undulating waves of blue and turquoise representing the waves of the beaches near Lahaina—every surfer’s dream. The wave images are outlined in a sawtooth design that evokes the power and challenges of the surf.

"Regardless of the medium, my work directly relates to and honors my ancestors, my people, the environment and the animals." Lillian Pitt Lillian Pitt designed this blanket exclusively for Pendleton. They called themselves the River People, and they called the Columbia River simply Big River or the Nch'i-Wana. The repeated patterns on the River People blanket are known as the Salmon Gill design. The Saxony Hills Blanket references the changing landscape of Navajo weaving in the 1800s. Spanish explorers had introduced Churro sheep to the Southwest in the late 17th century. The Churro bred by the Navajo produced a somewhat coarse, long-staple wool that was hand-spun and woven into shoulder robes or blankets, shirts and sashes. Hand-spun wool from these animals was the main source of yarn for Navajo blankets until the 1860s. Then Saxony yarns arrived in the Southwest by way of the Santa Fe Trail and later the railroad. By the mid-1900s, Saxony yarns were used by the Navajos for general weaving. The Saxony Hills Blanket incorporates traditional, geometric Navajo motifs - diamonds, stepped triangles and Spider Woman cross patterns. Unnapped.

It is a salute to the skilled Native American steel workers who built some of the city's most beautiful and famous landmarks, including the George Washington Bridge and recently the new One World Trade Center. Most had been driven out of Florida, but small bands remained in the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp. There they retained their culture - farming, hunting alligators and building thatch-roofed homes called chickees. They traveled in dugout canoes made from cypress logs, visiting trading posts along the Miami River with pelts and egret plumes to trade for supplies. When the first sewing machines arrived, Seminole women began making intricate colorful patchwork by sewing long strips of fabric together. In 1928 the Tamiami Trail, the highway from Tampa to Miami, opened and the Seminole saw new trade opportunities. The inner and outer cairns line up with rising stars as they appear for the first time on the horizon after being behind the sun. These appearances marked specific events such as the drought season, planting time or the end of summer and time to leave the soon-to-be-snowy mountaintop. The starry skies on which the Medicine Wheel is based inspired our Star Wheels design. Unnapped, sueded trim, 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Mountain Majesty

Mountain Majesty
Category: Bed Collections

The Mountain majesty blanket design was inspired by navajo hand weaving created in the Southwest circa 1920-1940. Pendleton has woven into the pattern a host of positive, native American-inspired symbols. Terraced steps, reference the mountains we climb in life's journey to reach the clouds and sky above. Big mountains are symbols of abundance. Motifs in the central stripe may be interpreted as saddlebags for a journey up and over the mountains. Diamonds may signify the four mountains sacred to the Navajo. Centered on these traditional diamond geometrics are butterfly-like images, uplifting symbols of hope and life. Some believe that butterflies can deliver a wish up to the Great Spirits. Inspirational symbols are complemented by quiet colors that evoke the evening light of a Western landscape and the faded hues of vintage Old Glory. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

These blankets are robe size, the size preferred by Native Americans for ceremonial purposes and wrapping about oneself as a robe. They are impressive as wall hangings and practical when folded on a sofa or at the foot of a bed.
Our American Treasures design celebrates the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, created in 1916 to manage our national parks and monuments. It celebrates the majestic and historic places, and the individuals who have been protecting them for a century. The design's motifs evoke the forests, rivers and mountains under the protection of the dedicated men and women who serve as keepers of America's natural beauty. Classic geometric patterns remind us of the Native Americans who have lived and cared for the land for so many centuries. From missions to monuments, wilderness to wildlife, our national parks contain American treasures, and Pendleton salutes all who watch over them.

These blankets are robe size, the size preferred by Native Americans for ceremonial purposes and wrapping about oneself as a robe. They are impressive as wall hangings and practical when folded on a sofa or at the foot of a bed.
The central image on this design showcases images reminiscent of the squash blossom beadwork crafted by Native American jewelry makers of the Southwest. The iconic "squash blossom" necklace first appeared in the 1880s. Some say the squash blossom bead design is directly connected to the importance of the plant itself. Others say it is simply a pleasing design element, perhaps inspired by the buttons on pants worn by the Spanish and Mexican horsemen. Regardless, there is no denying the importance of squash to numerous Native American farmers. The word is from Narragansett Indians of Rhode Island. They used the word askutasquash which meant "eaten raw or uncooked." Different kinds of squash were grown as food by numerous tribes. It was the first of the "three sisters" (squash, corn and beans) to be domesticated. Beautiful bead design or flower of sustaining crop, the squash blossom deserves celebrating.

The Buffalo Wilderness design recalls a peaceful time long, long ago. It was the time when millions of buffalo roamed grassy plains from Oregon to the Great Lakes, from Canada to Mexico. Today our National Parks protect the wilderness, and the remaining buffalo there roam free. One of the largest herds (more than 4,000) of free-ranging wild buffalo lives in and around Yellowstone National Park. It is thought to be the only place in the United States where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. You can also see herds in Badlands, Grand Teton, Theodore Roosevelt and Wind Cave National Parks.

This idea of tension between the city and mountains, indoors and outdoors, old and new, captivated us. The unearthly yet natural phenomena of the Northern Lights reinforced this tension. These elements can be seen throughout the collection in silhouettes, texture and color palette. Given the seasonal direction for the collection it was only right that Levi’s partner with Pendleton Woolen Mills to create a unique blanket as a highlight piece. Stainless Steel Mug
    Category: Kitchen Collections

Our Heroic Chief 16 oz. stainless steel travel mug has a striking silhouette of a Native American Chief as the central image of this unique, circa 1920s design. The feathered headdress was a ceremonial war bonnet worn only by chiefs and warriors. The war bonnet was common among Plains Indian men - Sioux, Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Cree - but was seldom worn on the battlefield. Reserved for formal occasions, the golden eagle-feather war bonnet was a spiritual symbol of a man's courage and honor. It was a sign of respect that could be bestowed only by the tribe's elders. The bonnet was also believed to protect the wearer. Later, other Native American tribes adopted the headdress as simply a sign of authority. Today, a brave or good deed may still be rewarded with an eagle feather. Gacefully tapered to fit most cup holders. Hand wash for best results. Gift boxed. Imported.

    Thunder and Earthquake Pillows
The Thunder and Earthquake design references a legend of the Yurok, the original people of Northern California along the Klamath River. In the beginning there was no ocean, just prairie. Then Thunder and Earthquake agreed that the people would live better if they had an ocean. So Earthquake traveled with Kingfisher to faraway Opis to bring back the water in abalone shells. As they went, Earthquake sank the land at the north end of the world behind them. At the south end of the world, Thunder helped by breaking down trees. Soon the water extended all the way from the north to the south end of the world. There were salmon and seals in the water. So it is that the prairie became ocean, because Thunder and Earthquake wished it so.

The Bright River blanket is a brilliant interpretation of the Navajo weaving style known as the Eye Dazzler. In it vibrant color flows and undulates like sunset reflected on the waters of a Southwest river. Mesmerizing designs such as these appeared during the Transitional period (1880-1895) when Navajo weavers shifted from making blankets to crafting rugs. During that time traders introduced Germantown yarns via the Santa Fe Railroad. The colorful, 4-ply wool yarns were produced at textile mills in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Unlike traditional handspun yarns, these new yarns boasted consistent textures and fabulous new colors from commercial aniline dyes. They encouraged experimentation, innovation and creativity among the weavers. Intricate new designs were influenced by the dramatic serapes woven in northern Mexico. Borrowing from the elaborate serrated diamonds of Rio Grande/Saltillo serapes, Navajo weavers created eye-dazzling optical effects in brilliant new color palettes. Unnapped, Whipstitched.

In some stories he is the Creator, in some a hero or messenger, in others a trickster not unlike Raven. In Zuni legend, Coyote and Eagle go hunting together. But it is too dark. When they come to a river, Coyote nearly drowns while Eagle soars across. Eventually they come to a village where the kachina spirits keep light, for whenever they need it. Coyote and Eagle borrow the box of light and go hunting. Soon curious Coyote opens the box. The moon and sun escape, taking with them the light and warmth. And that's how Winter began. Midnight Eyes
    Category: Bed Collections

This Native American-inspired pattern, woven in our American mills, is a tribute to the creatures of the night. According to Cherokee legend, when the animals and plants were first made they were told to watch and stay awake for seven nights. Just as young men sometimes fast and keep awake during their vision quest. Nearly all the animals made it through the first night, but several dropped off to sleep on the second. Each night thereafter, others nodded off until on the seventh night only the owl, the panther and a few more were still awake. These animals were given the power to see and go about in the dark, and to prey on the birds and animals that must sleep at night. The diamonds in this pattern suggest those keen nocturnal eyes that look fearlessly into the darkness and see all. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

    Abiquiu Sunset
    Category: Bed Collections

On a rocky mesa above the Rio Chama in northern New Mexico sits the village of Abiquiu. Native Americans inhabited the river valley for thousands of years before the Spanish established a small town here in the early 1700s. Some historians believe Abiquiu was named after a Tewa Pueblo village that existed on the site in 1300 A.D., and there are numerous prehistoric Pueblo sites in the area. Abiquiu is thought to be the beginning of The Old Spanish Trail, linking Santa Fe and Los Angeles. In 1949, Modern artist Georgia O'Keefe was drawn to Abiquiu's mesas and mountains sculpted by wind, water and time. She lived and painted there for more than 40 years, inspired both by the landscape and Native American art and culture. This blanket, woven in our American mills, reflects the beauty of Abiquiu's natural red rock cliffs at sunset, layered in bands of color - gold, brown, purple and maroon. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

    Heroic Chief
    Category: Pillow and Shams

A striking silhouette of a Native American Chief is the central image of this unique, circa 1920s design. Napped, felt binding. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.
