Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Star Wheels

Star Wheels

High atop the Big Horn Range in Wyoming sits one of the best-known medicine wheels or sacred hoops. This spoked circle of stones was created by Plains Indians between 300-800 years ago. Astronomers have noted that during the summer solstice the spokes of the wheel point to the rising and setting of the sun and four bright stars. At the center of the 80-foot, wheel-like circle is a pile of stones, or cairn, connected to the rim by spokes of stones. More cairns are found around the rim of the circle. The inner and outer cairns line up with rising stars as they appear for the first time on the horizon after being behind the sun. These appearances marked specific events such as the drought season, planting time or the end of summer and time to leave the soon-to-be-snowy mountaintop. The starry skies on which the Medicine Wheel is based inspired our Star Wheels design. Unnapped, sueded trim, 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Buffalo Creation Story - Legendary Collection

Buffalo Creation Story - Legendary Collection

For more than a century, Pendleton Woolen Mills has woven the legends and symbols of Native American tribes into beautiful blankets. Native Americans were our first and remain our most loyal customers. In the early 20th century, Pendleton was among the few American mills making blankets specifically for the Indian trade. A Pendleton blanket continues to signify honor and respect. For a hundred years, Native Americans have acknowledged births, deaths and major milestones and accomplishments with the gift of a Pendleton blanket.

Buffalos are not typically associated with Navajo culture. So when contemporary Navajo artist Andrew Hobson discovered a story of how the buffalo evolved in Navajo creation stories, he was fascinated. Hobson's original painting of the Buffalo-Who-Never-Dies of the White Buffalo Tribe inspired this Pendleton blanket. In the tale, Buffalo became angry with Holy Man for having two buffalo women as his wives. Holy Man killed the angry buffalo with magic arrows and wands. But to his dismay, all the buffalos began to die. Then sad, Holy Man brought the buffalo back to life and showed him how to revive all the other buffalo. The central figure shows the angry buffalo fractured in pieces to symbolize his death and journey back to life. Four buffalo tribes are shown inside protective medicine hoops, and the four sacred mountain ranges of the Navajo surround the central buffalo. The artist frames the work in the abstract rainbow symbolizing his personal Yeii, or protective deity. Napped. Felt bound. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Boro Patchwork

Boro Patchwork

Boro patchwork reflects the Japanese value of "mottainai," or "too good to waste." Boro, which means "rags," describes clothing or bedding that has been patched and repaired many times. Peasants, merchants and artisans in Japan wore it for more than 300 years, from the Edo period in the 1600s through the early Showa period in the 1920s. Patches are often worked in "hishizashi," personal stitching patterns developed by menders. Some Boro items are sewn through generations. The beautiful indigo shades of repaired cotton and rough-spun hemp work together in a subtle patchwork that reflects a culture's devotion to preservation. Napped, whipstitch trim. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Infinite Steps
Category: Bed Collections

Through careful arrangement of color and shape, Infinite Steps creates a three-dimensional staircase on a two-dimensional plane. This is an optical illusion-an illustration that tricks the brain into seeing what is not actually there. The traditional craft of quilting uses many optical illusions in its patterns, such as Carpenter's Color Wheel, Tumbling Blocks, Pinwheels and variations of the Log Cabin pattern. Infinite Steps pays tribute to the precision and planning quilters use when creating these dazzling effects. Napped, whipstitch trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - North Star

North Star

Through the ages, a bright star in the Little Dipper has been a constant source of navigation for the peoples of Earth. The North Star appears stationary, and the Inuit call it Nuuttuittuq, the star that never moves. Paiute legend relates how a brave son named Na-Gah became the star that does not travel and the guiding light for all living creatures. Na-Gah climbed to the top of a high mountain to win his father's respect. The peak was so tall that he found himself high above all the other mountains. When his father came looking for him, he found Na-Gah stuck high on the mountain peak. Not wanting his son to die, his father turned Na-Gah into a star that shines brightly and guides all who can see him. The Native American-inspired central star and the deep colors of this blanket evoke the steady light of the North Star in the night sky. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Rio Canyon

The slot canyons of the American Southwest are geographic wonders with spiritual significance to local tribes. Carved over eons by streams, rivers and washes that now run dry, the canyon walls today reveal colorful layers of Navajo Sandstone and a rich geologic history. In times past, Navajo carefully entered these deep formations, mindful of the presence of the Great Spirit. Our earthy Rio Canyon design nods to this magical beauty and the subtle striations of color revealed by water moving through stone. Unnapped, sueded trim, 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Saltillo Diamond

This pattern echoes the influences on the Rio Grande weavers of New Mexico, who produced cotton weavings as early as 800 AD. When churro sheep arrived in the region in 1540, shepherds, spinners and weavers elevated utilitarian weaving to art through color and pattern. The Saltillo Diamond, a Mexican motif, was adopted into later Rio Grande weavings. Grande blankets were made of two strips joined in the middle by the Costura del Centro, or central seam. Napped, whipstitch trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

The design's roots are in the traditional banded Cheif Stripe design, which evolved into a "nine-element" layout. The missionaly influence is evident in the corss symbol - seen in the beaded designs of Plains Indians and Navajo weavings. The reversible jacquard has two dramatically different looks, grey on one side, ivory on the other. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in USA. Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Skywalkers

Skywalkers

The Skywalkers design was inspired by Art Deco design elements of some of New York City's iconic skyscrapers such as the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. It is a salute to the skilled Native American steel workers who built some of the city's most beautiful and famous landmarks, including the George Washington Bridge and recently the new One World Trade Center. Many of the workers are from the Kahnawake Reserve near Montreal, where in 1886 the Mohawk tradition of ironworking began. Hired as unskilled laborers to build a bridge over the St. Lawrence River, the Mohawk quickly earned a reputation as top-notch, sure-footed workers on high steel. Beginning in the 1920s these daring men raised and riveted steel at dizzying heights above the city. Six generations of Mohawk and other Iroquois "skywalkers," renowned for their courage and agility, have helped shape the New York City skyline. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton, Dry clean. Made in the USA.

Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Tamiami Trail

Tamiami Trail

By the end of the Seminole Wars in 1858, the Seminole population of Florida was reduced from thousands to a few hundred. Most had been driven out of Florida but small bands remained in the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp. There they retained their culture-farming, hunting alligators and building thatch-roofed homes called chickees. They traveled in dugout canoes made from cypress logs, visiting trading posts along ther Miami River with pelts and egret plumes to trade for supplies. When the first sewing machines arrived, Seminole women began making intricate colorful patchwork by sewing long stropes of fabric together. In 1928, the Tamiami trail, the highway from tampa to Miami, opened and the Seminole saw new trade opportunities. They took advantage of the tourist market for crafts such as patchwork and palmetto dolls. Their entrepreneurial success along the Tamiami Trail is a testimony to Seminole creativity and resilience. Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Coyote Steals Fire

Coyote Steals Fire

Long ago, Coyote worried about how the people suffered in winter. Coyote journeyed to the tall mountain where the Fire Beings lived. He watched day and night, learning their ways and weaknesses. Early one morning when a sleepy Fire Being was coming to stand watch, Coyote snatched Fire and ran. The Fire Beings gave chase. One caught the tip of his tail, which turned white and has remained so ever since. Coyote tossed Fire to Squirrel, and the heat caused her tail to bend upward, where it remains to this day. Squirrel tossed Fire to Frog. A Fire Being grabbed Frog's tail, but he tore free, leaving it behind forever. Frog tossed Fire to Wood, and Wood swallowed up Fire. The Fire Beings tried to bring Fire from Wood. They sang songs and offered gifts. They made threats and tore at Wood with knives. Defeated, they returned to their mountain. Coyote alone knew the trick of bringing Fire from Wood. He went to the People and showed them how to use a sharpened stick in a small hole to bring Fire to their hearths and homes. Just crib size, but so warm it will be taken wherever the little muchacho or muchacha goes. Made of our softest wool. A treasured baby gift when customized with embroidery. The bison, often referred to as the buffalo, is the largest land mammal in North America. A big buffalo can weigh a ton (2,000 pounds!) and stand six feet tall. And they can run as fast as 35 miles an hour. Long ago millions of these mighty buffalo roamed the plains, prairies and river valleys. It was a time when there were no houses on the hills. When countless forests were green and the trees grew tall. When deer grazed by mighty rivers. Today you can see wild buffalo only in our National Parks, where they are protected. This archival design is a fusion (sampler) of Native American-inspired symbols and colors. In the black-and-white drawing, a Native American chief is wearing a robe that inspired our re-creation. The original design was created to appeal to Pendleton's first blanket customers, the Native American peoples of the West. The unique colors and intricately woven patterns were hallmarks of early Pendleton Trade Blankets. The stripe is woven of bands in varying widths, color combinations and traditional geometric shapes—triangles, diamonds, zigzags and more. Aloha to Lahaina, on the island of Maui, once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The Lahaina Wave blanket salutes the islands and surfers, then and now. In 1779, the log of Captain Cook’s expedition ship HMS Discovery recorded the first European written description of Hawaiian surfing. By then, surfing was an art and popular sport among native Hawaiians. Chiefs or kings were proud to show their mastery of the waves, and surfing was known as the “Sport of Kings.” The design of this blanket combines traditional tribal inspired designs from the mainland with undulating waves of blue and turquoise representing the waves of the beaches near Lahaina—every surfer’s dream. The wave images are outlined in a sawtooth design that evokes the power and challenges of the surf.

These appearances marked specific events such as the drought season, planting time or the end of summer.

By the end of the Seminole Wars in 1858, the Seminole population of Florida was reduced from thousands to a few hundred. Most had been driven out of Florida, but small bands remained in the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp. There they retained their culture - farming, hunting alligators and building thatch-roofed homes called chickees. They traveled in dugout canoes made from cypress logs, visiting trading posts along the Miami River with pelts and egret plumes to trade for supplies. When the first sewing machines arrived, Seminole women began making intricate colorful patchwork by sewing long strips of fabric together. In 1928 the Tamiami Trail, the highway from Tampa to Miami, opened and the Seminole saw new trade opportunities. They took advantage of the tourist market for crafts such as patchwork and palmetto dolls. Their entrepreneurial success along the Tamiami Trail is a testimony to Seminole creativity and resilience.

The central image on this design showcases images reminiscent of the squash blossom beadwork crafted by Native American jewelry makers of the Southwest. The iconic "squash blossom" necklace first appeared in the 1880s. Some say the squash blossom bead design is directly connected to the importance of the plant itself. Others say it is simply a pleasing design element, perhaps inspired by the buttons on pants worn by the Spanish and Mexican horsemen. Regardless, there is no denying the importance of squash to numerous Native American farmers. The word is from Narragansett Indians of Rhode Island. They used the word askutasquash which meant "eaten raw or uncooked." Different kinds of squash were grown as food by numerous tribes. It was the first of the "three sisters" (squash, corn and beans) to be domesticated. Beautiful bead design or flower of sustaining crop, the squash blossom deserves celebrating.

The Hualapai, or People of the Tall Pines, have been residents of the Grand Canyon region for more than 800 years. Traditionally, they moved between plateau and canyon, hunting game and raising crops wherever water flowed. The Hualapai tell a legend of how a great flood rose, covering Earth in a huge lake of water. No one could move about. Pack-i-tha-a-wi, a Hualapai hero, strode into the water carrying a gigantic flint knife and a heavy wooden club. He plunged the knife into water-covered Earth, using the club to drive it deeper and deeper until a canyon was formed. Through this magnificent canyon, the floodwaters flowed into the Sea of Sunset. The grateful sun shone down on Pack-i-tha-a-wi's handiwork, baking the surface into the vibrant colors and fantastic shapes seen today in the Grand Canyon, including Cedar Mountain. Askutasquash

Then Thunder and Earthquake agreed that the people would live better if they had an ocean. So Earthquake traveled with Kingfisher to faraway Opis to bring back the water in abalone shells. As they went, Earthquake sank the land at the north end of the world behind them. At the south end of the world, Thunder helped by breaking down trees. Soon the water extended all the way from the north to the south end of the world. There were salmon and seals in the water. So it is that the prairie became ocean, because Thunder and Earthquake wished it so. This intricate blanket pattern incorporates repeated triangular and zigzag designs often seen in Yurok basketry. They are impressive as wall hangings and practical when folded on a sofa or at the foot of a bed. Felt bound. 82% pure virigin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

The Bright River blanket is a brilliant interpretation of the Navajo weaving style known as the Eye Dazzler. In it vibrant color flows and undulates like sunset reflected on the waters of a Southwest river. Mesmerizing designs such as these appeared during the Transitional period (1880-1895) when Navajo weavers shifted from making blankets to crafting rugs. During that time traders introduced Germantown yarns via the Santa Fe Railroad. The colorful, 4-ply wool yarns were produced at textile mills in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Unlike traditional handspun yarns, these new yarns boasted consistent textures and fabulous new colors from commercial aniline dyes. They encouraged experimentation, innovation and creativity among the weavers. Intricate new designs were influenced by the dramatic serapes woven in northern Mexico. Borrowing from the elaborate serrated diamonds of Rio Grande/Saltillo serapes, Navajo weavers created eye-dazzling optical effects in brilliant new color palettes. Unnapped, Whipstitched.

    Pendleton%20Woolen%20Mills - Heroic Chief Pillows

    Heroic Chief Pillows

A striking silhouette of a Native American Chief is the central image of this unique, circa 1920s design. The feathered headdress was a ceremonial war bonnet worn only by chiefs and warriors. The war bonnet was common among Plains Indian men - Sioux, Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Cree - but was seldom worn on the battlefield. Reserved for formal occasions, the golden eagle-feather war bonnet was a spiritual symbol of a man's courage and honor. It was a sign of respect that could be bestowed only by the tribe's elders. The bonnet was also believed to protect the wearer. Later, other Native American tribes adopted the headdress as simply a sign of authority. Today, a brave or good deed may still be rewarded with an eagle feather. Napped, felt binding. 82% wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA.

    Mountain Majesty

The Mountain majesty blanket design was inspired by navajo hand weaving created in the Southwest circa 1920-1940. Pendleton has woven into the pattern a host of positive, native American-inspired symbols. Terraced steps, reference the mountains we climb in life's journey to reach the clouds and sky above. Big mountains are symbols of abundance. Motifs in the central stripe may be interpreted as saddlebags for a journey up and over the mountains. Diamonds may signify the four mountains sacred to the Navajo. Centered on these traditional diamond geometrics are butterfly-like images, uplifting symbols of hope and life. Some believe that butterflies can deliver a wish up to the Great Spirits. Inspirational symbols are complemented by quiet colors that evoke the evening light of a Western landscape and the faded hues of vintage Old Glory. Unnapped, sueded trim. 82% wool/18% cotton.
